Cerebral Hemisphere Flashcards
What fissure separates the two hemispheres?
The median longitudinal fissure
What structure connects the two hemispheres?
The Corpus Callosum
What is the function of the frontal lobe?
Controls motor function and intellect
What is the function of the parietal lobe?
Interprets somatosensory information
What is the function of the occipital lobe?
Controls vision
What is the function of the temporal lobe?
Controls hearing and smell
Area 3,1,2 is also known as?
The postcentral gyrus
The Primary Auditory cortex relates to which Brodmann’s area?
Areas 41,42
Area 17 relates to which area of the brain?
The medial surface of the occipital lobe - the primary visual cortex
The visual association area relates to which Brodmann’s area?
Area 18,19
What kind of input does the Primary Sensory Area recieve?
General Sensory input - relays it to the contralateral side of the body
What is the function of the prefrontal cortex?
Controls cognitive functions of higher order - intellect, judgement, planning and prediction
What is the function of the inferior parietal lobule?
To act as an interface between somatosensory cortex and visual/auditory areas. Will contribute to language functions in dominant hemispheres
What is the function of the superior parietal lobule?
Interprets general sensory info and conscious awareness of contralateral half of the body
What is the function of Wernicke’s area?
To understand spoken word
What is the function of the inferior surface of the temporal lobe?
To recieve info from the olfactory tract which allows for the conscious appreciation of smell
What is the function of the limbic lobe?
Controls emotional aspects of behaviour and memory
Area 44 and 45 correspond to which area in the brain?
Broca’s area of motor speech
What is the function of commisural fibres?
To connect the corpus callosum
What is the function of association fibres?
Connect one part of the cortex with the other
Where do projection fibres lie?
They run between cerebral cortex and various subcortical centres. Passes through the corona radiata and the internal capsule
What is the Basal Ganglia?
A collection of neuronal cell bodies buried in white matter
What is the function of the Basal Ganglia?
To assist in the regulation of the initiation and termination of movements
What is the function of the Caudate and the Putamen?
To receive info from the motor cortex, premotor cortex and the thalamus
What is the function of the Globus Pallidus?
To recieve info from input regions and projects them to the thalamus
What is the function of the Substantia Niagra?
To recieve info from input regions
What is the lentiform nucleus made up of?
The globus pallidus and putamen
What is Broadman area 22 also known as ?
Wernicke’s area
