Dement and Klietman (Procedures) Flashcards
1
Q
Summarise the procedure simply
A
- Introduction/ set up phase
- Research question 1
- Research question 2
- Research questiion 3
2
Q
Describe the introduction phase
A
- The pptts were told to not drink caffine or alchol before the study
- The ppts were told to arrrive at the lab before their normal bedtime
- The ppts slept in a dark quite room
- Ppts were fitted with electrodes. 2+ near their eyes and 2 or 3 on their scalp. The wires were gathered into a ponytail and fed into the experimeters room
- The EEG ran continoulsy throughout the night
- Ppts always returned to sleep in 5 minutes
3
Q
Why were the wires gathered into a ponytail?
A
To allow ppts to move freely and prevent entanglement
4
Q
The EGG ran continously throughout the night…
A
At speeds of 3 or 6mm per seconds
5
Q
Pptts were not told….
A
- Their EGG pattern
- Whether their eyes were moving
6
Q
Research question 1
A
- ppts were either woken from REM or NREM sleep (not told which)
- Whether they would be woken up during REM/NREM was decided in different ways for different people
- Random number table= Ppts were woken according to a randoms table. (PM/KC)
- Random groups= In groups of 3 REM/NREM (DN)
- Deception= Telling the ppts they would be be awoken in REM but actually in NREM/ REM randomly (WD)
- On the researchers whim= (IR)
- After be woken up ppts stated whether they had a dream or not into the recorder. Describe the content.
- The experimenter would occatioanly enter the room to ask further questions
7
Q
Research question 2
A
- Ppts were either woken 5 or 15 mins after REM sleep
- They were woken up tp estimate the lenth of their dream (5/15 mins could choose longer periods
- The content of their dreams and length of teh dream narrative (words) were correlated with teh duration of REM
- Initially ppts would be woken up after a variety of REM durations and asked to estimate the duration of dream (too hard for ppts)
8
Q
Research question 3
A
- Ptts were woken as soon as 1/4 patterns of eye movements had occured for a minute
- They were asked what they had been dreaming about (self report)
- Eye movments were detected using electrodes around the eyes (EOG)
- Comparison EEG records were taken from ppts who were asked to watch distant close up activity
