How long does it take for delirium to develop and last?
Develops over 1-2 days, lasts 8-12 days
What is the pathophysiology behind delirium?
Decreased acetylcholine, increased dopamine, increased cortisol
What causes delirium?
PINCH ME
Pain Infection Nutrition Constipation Hydration/hypoxia

Which medications cause delirium?
Opiates, steroids, levodopa, anti-cholinergics, benzodiazepines
Which are the screening tools for delirium?
4AT, CAM, AMTS
What are some mimics of delirium? (differential diagnoses)
Unilateral weakness –> stroke/intracerebral lesion
Nystagmus –> seizures
Ataxic gait, abnormal eye movements –> Wernickes encephalopathy
Insidious decline –> dementia
If need be, which sedation is given to calm delirious patients?
Haloperidol or diazepam
