Dehydration Flashcards
1
Q
Explain how HYPONATREMIC dehydration causes seizures
A
Greater loss of Na than water
- -> ECF goes to intracellular compartments
- -> increased ICF
- -> increased brain volume
- -> seizures
2
Q
Explain how HYPERNATREMIC dehydration causes seizures
A
Greater loss of water than NA
- -> ICF leaves intracellular compartments
- -> brain shrinks
- -> seizures
(also get hyperreflexia, reduced GCS, multiple small cerebral haemorrhages)
3
Q
6 red flags for shock in a currently dehydrated patient
A
- Deteriorating child
- Irritability, lethargy (altered responsiveness)
- Sunken eyes, fontanelle depression
- Tachycardia
- Tachypnoea
- Reduced skin turgor
4
Q
4 indications that a patient has gone into shock
A
- Pale/ mottled skin
- Cold extremities
- CRP >2s
- Hypotension
