Circulatory system
A system of blood vessels with a pump and valves to ensure a one way flow of blood
Single circulatory system
A circulatory system where the blood only passes through the circuit once to carry oxygen, and goes from heart to gas exchange organ to rest of body
Double circulatory system
A circulatory system where the blood passes twice through the heart twice on a single journey. It goes from heart to gas exchange organ back to heart and to rest of body.
Pathogen
Disease-causing microorganism
Transmissible disease
A disease in which the pathogen can be transmissible from one host to another through direct contact (ex: body fluids, blood) or indirectly (ex : through contaminated surfaces, water)
Active immunity
The long-term defence against a pathogen by the production of antibodies in the body.
Passive immunity
The short-term defence against a pathogen from antibodies acquired from another individual ex: mother to infant
Type 1 diabete
Autoimmune Disease caused by the immune system targeting and destroying its own body cells
