Unfolds the comprehension of idea. Etymologically, it is a manifestation of something by its logical markers, namely conceptual features of its comprehension.
DEFINITION
What are the significance of definition?
Increases vocabulary, clarifies meaning, explains theoretically, persuade others
What are the two parts of definition?
DEFINIENDUM AND DEFINIENS
The word being defined (e.g. man) or the subject
DEFINIENDUM
The word or words that assign meaning to a term (is a rational being) or the predicate
DEFINIENS
Done by pointing, drawing, or by way of identification (e.g. parts of the eye - cornea, iris, pupil, schlera; parts of the flower - petal, sepal, pistil, filaments)
NOMINAL DEFINITION
Give samples of definition by synonym or equivalent term
IMPECCABLE - FLAWLESS; DECALOGUE - TEN COMMANDMENTS
Give samples of definition by word derivation or etymology
DOCTOR - DOCERE; UNIVERSITY - UNIVERSITAS; NATURE - NATURA; CRITIC - KRITIKOS
Manifestation of the nature of a thing by its objective features
REAL DEFINITION
Gives the genus and specific difference (metaphysical definition). For example, beaker is a lab container
ESSENTIAL
Gives properties and accidents
NON-ESSENTIAL
Man is capable of political and social undertakings
BY ESSENTIAL PROPERTIES
Microscope is designed to magnify the image of minute objects
BY PROPER OBJECTIVE
Man is an erect vertebrate having two hands, two feet, no tail
BY MORPHOLOGY OR STRUCTURE
Manifests common idea about the thing (e.g. Bibliotics is the study of handwritings)
POPULAR
Manifests objective features or elements (e.g. Bibliotics is the scientific study of documents and writing materials to determine its genuineness or authorship)
SCIENTIFIC
Deliberate assignment of a meaning to a word (e.g. LOBAT, DEPED, PED XING)
STIPULATIVE
Conventional meaning appearing in dictionaries and encyclopedias (e.g. HUMERUS - long bone of the upper part of the arm)
LEXICAL DEFINITION
Adds or removes vagueness in conventional definitions
PRECISING DEFINITION
Adequate and scientifically useful descriptions of objects. These are definitions usually found in Science books.
THEORETICAL DEFINITION
Influence perception, values, and attitudes of a person (e.g. Abortion is an inhuman act of murdering a defenseless human being).
