D8 endoplasmic reticulum structure Flashcards
1
Q
What is the endoplasmic reticulum?
A
An elaborate system of double membranes, forming flattened sacks, with interconnecting fluid filled spaces (Cisternae)
2
Q
What is the endoplasmic reticulum connected to?
A
The ER is connected to the outer nuclear membrane (Nuclear Envelope) and the cell surface membrane, the cysternae form a network of passages which allow materials to pass through the cell
3
Q
What are the two types of Endoplasmic Reticulum?
A
- Rouch ER - With ribosomes
* Rough ER - Without ribosomes
4
Q
Describe Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
A
- RER has ribosomes on the outer surface and transports the protiens made there.
- It is found in large quantities in salivary glands
5
Q
Describe smooth endplasmic reticulum
A
- Its membrane does not have ribosomes and is associated with the synthesis and transport of lipids, steroids and hormone
Found in large quantities in the liver.
