D10 ribosomes Flashcards
What are ribosomes?
Small, dense organelles that are found in the cytoplasm of cells or attached to Rough Endoplasmic Recticulum
They are small in prokaryotic cells (70s) than eukaryotic cells (80s)
What are the two types of ribosomes?
Larger 80s type ribosomes found in Eukaryotic cells
Smaller 70s type ribosomes - found in Prokaryotic cells
Where are ribosomes found?
Rough endoplasmic reticulum (proteins)
Free cytoplasm (Enzymes)
Where are ribosomes manufactured?
Nucleolus from ribosomal RNA and protein
What is the function of ribosomes
Ribosomes are important in protein synthesis as they are the site of translation, where mRNA is used to assemble the polypeptide chain
Overview for longer answers
A ribosome is a small dense organelle found in large number in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
The ribosomes found in prokaryotic cells are smaller (70s) than those found in Eukaryotic cells (80s)
Ribosomes are formed in the Nucleolus from RNA and Protein
The play an important part in protein synthesis as they are the site of translation, where mRNA is used to assemble polypeptide chains.
