Cytology Flashcards
What causes pure transudates?
Describe the content
- hypoalbuminemia
- low in protein and cells
What causes modified transudates?
impaired blood flow or lymph flow
What causes exudates?
Describe the content
- increased capillary permeability, secondary to inflammation
- high in cells and proteins
What would you expect on the CBC with a GI rupture?
- inflammatory leukogram
- neutropenia with left shift
What do the presence of platelets indicate in a fluid cytology?
blood contamination
Name 5 examples of round cell tumors
- lymphomas
- plasma cell tumors
- histiocytomas
- transmissible venereal tumors
- malignant histiocytosis
What are the features of round cell tumors?
- cells usually individual
- circular cells with round nuclei, distinct cytoplasmic borders
- cells may be well differentiated
What are the features of epithelial tumors?
- cells in sheets or clusters
- distinct cytoplasmic borders
- cells large with abundant cytoplasm
- sometimes differentiated
What are the features of mesenchymal tumors?
- elongated nuclei and cytoplasmic tails
- may be few cells
- usually individual but sometimes in clusters
What types of cells are present in a hyperplastic/reactive lymph node?
increased plasma cells
What types of cells are present in lymphadenitis?
neutrophils or macrophages
What types of cells do you see with lymphoma?
> 50% lymphoblasts
