Cycles Flashcards
What processes add co2 to the air in the carbon cycle?
Respiration and combustion
What is abiotic?
Non living
How can carbon be stores for millions of years and released?
Fossilised and stored as carbohydrates
Combustion releases carbon
This is because it has NOT been decomposed
How does carbon in the atmosphere become carbon present in organic remains in the soil?
See notes
White booklet - decay and the carbon cycle
How is carbon stores in plants?
Carbohydrates (e.g. Starch) Protein Lipids Cellulose DNA
How is carbon stored in animals?
Carbohydrates (e.g. Glycogen)
Protein
Lipids
DNA
Go study the carbon cycle diagram
Ok
Why do things produce extra heat when they decompose?
Because respiration releases heat as it is not always 100% efficient and some energy is not transferred
In what form do plants absorb nitrogen?
Nitrate (NO3)
How does nitrogen in animal tissue become nitrogen in the atmosphere?
See notes

How is nitrogen stored in plants?
Amino acids

How is nitrogen stored in animals?

(Vitamins)
How is nitrogen stored in detritus?
Protein
What is detritus?
Dead matter
What do decomposers do on the nitrogen cycle?
They decompose proteins in excreted urea and detritus and release ammonia back into the soil
