CVA Flashcards
Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
linked to atherosclerotic thrombosis which causes a temporary interruption of blood supply to an area of the brain
Ischemic Stroke - Embolus
Embolus (solid, liquid, or gas) travels through the bloodstream to the cerebral arteries causing occlusion of a blood vessel and resultant infarct.
- MCA is most commonly affected
- often presents as a headache
Ischemic Stroke - Thrombus
An atherosclerotic plaque develops in an artery and eventually occludes the artery of a branching artery causing an infarct.
- usually occurs during sleep or upon waking after a MI or post surgical procedure
Hemorrhage Stroke
bleeding in the brain due to a rupture in blood supply, usually associated with hypertension.
- presents as severe headache, vomiting, high blood pressure, and has an abrupt onset of symptoms.
- usually occurs during the day
