Culture and Intelligence Flashcards
Cultural Concepts of Intelligence
In India, intelligence is maintaining harmony and having self-awareness. In China, humility, self-knowledge and charity are markers of intelligence. Cultural concepts of intelligence vary.
Culture and Intelligence Testing
Western tests measure the individual’s performance, however other cultures value group effort. Tests may have language or culture biases and focus on western ideas (abstract reasoning/logic) rather than what other cultures value.
Stereotype Threat
Ethnic groups are more vulnerable to anxiety during the testing process due to the belief that their results will confirm the existing stereotype that their ethnic group is inferior.
Flynn Effect
Rise in intelligence test performance that occurs over generations. Likely to be due to better nutrition and prenatal care, a more enriched and complex environment and increased access to education.
