What does the concept of intracultural diversity refer to?
Over the past 60 years the UK has become a more culturally diverse society. For example, Britain is a multicultural society in which a number of ethnic minority groups and religions exist alongside a White Christian majority.
Give two examples of values?
- Respect of the law
- Love of the monarchy
Name and explain 2 examples (ethnicity and religion) of subcultures
Ethnicity
- Ethnic groups living in Britain may continue to follow their own cultures diet and use television to keep up with the events in their own country of origin. (also continuing to follow tradition)
Religion
- Some members of religious groups may be more visible to the eye as they adhere to religious dress or headgear norms. (Leads to discrimination as different to British norms)

Define subculture?
A minority group of people who share values, norms, beliefs and dress codes, amongst other things. These mark them out as different from the dominant mainstream culture they exist with. (This occasionally leads to discrimination)
Define culture?
Refers to the whole way of life of a society.
(Includes values, norms, morals, knowledge)
Define cultural diversity
The existence of a variety of cultural or ethnic groups within a society.
Give an example of norms and values together?
Norms: attending class and completing homework
Value: achievement and obedience
Define high culture?
The cultural products and activities that are allocated exceptionally high status because they are supposedly represent humanities finest achievement.
They are thought to be superior to other activities. The upper class appreciate the activities the most and you will see these activities in private schools and elite universities.
What does the concept of intercultural diversity refer to?
That cultures differ from one another in terms of their values and norms. As what is considered normal in one society may be offensive in another.
Outline cultural hybridity
Comes about when cultures mix. For example, the British now drink French and Austrian wine and enjoy American films and TV.
Define transnational corporations?
Large companied who conduct their business in various parts of the world, buying and selling simultaneously around the globe.
Define popular culture?
Refers to those activities enjoyed by the mass of the population (viewed by those who subscribe to high cultural activities as shallow and dumbed down)

Shopping
- It is a major leisure activity and leads to conspicuous consumption, which is the acquisition of high-status goods and brands. (this has become a major means of expressing identity)

Social rules or expectations that govern social behaviour.
Define values?
Strong principles or beliefs that something is worthwhile.

Containing a tolerating a diversity of ethnic groups living alongside each other.
