cultures definition
have systems of shared ideas, concepts, rules, and meanings that underlie and are expressed in the way humans live

how they view and categorize the body, how they categorize illness, beliefs about what causes illness and how to treat it, how ill people are treated by society, how healers are treated in society, the role family and social ties play in an individual’s life, diet, language, how they view time
diversity definition
the inclusion of different types of people in a group or organization
cultural competence definition
a process of continuously attaining and integrating knowledge in order to better respond to or work within the cultural context of an individual or group from a diverse background
what constitutes cultural competence?
self-analysis, sensitivity, changing processes, and an interpretation of symptoms
health disparity definition
a particular type of health difference that is closely linked with social, economic, and/or environmental disadvantage. Health disparities adversely affect groups of people who have systematically experienced greater obstacles to health.
health equity definition
attainment of the highest level of health for all people

access, financial issues, discrimination, lack of provider training, lack of information
ethnicity definition
a population of humans whose members identify with each other, on the basis of a real or a presumed common genealogy or ancestry
gender identity
how you, in your head, think about yourself. It’s the chemistry that composes you and how you interpret what that means
gender expression
how you demonstrate your gender (based on traditional gender roles) through the ways you act, dress, behave, and interact
biological sex
the objectively measurable organs, hormones, and chromosomes
sexual orientation
who you are physically, spiritually, and emotionally attracted to based on their sex/gender in relation to your own
disability definition
a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, a person who has a history or record of such impairment, or a person who is perceived by others as having such an impairment
