10.1.2024 (Tuesday)
What is thinking?
purposeful organized process to make sense of the world (asking Q’s and finding ANSWERS)
What is critical thinking?
Gather and assess information in a logical balanced and reflective way to reach conclusions justified by reasoned argument based on available evidence
True or false? Can we enhance critical thinking through practice because it is a skill?
True
What are the 8 universal intellectual critical thinking standards?
clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, logic, and fairness
What is clarity?
Clarity is the gateway standard. If a statement is unclear, we cannot determine whether it is accurate or relevant. In fact, we cannot tell anything about it because we don’t yet know what it is saying.
What is accuracy?
A statement can be clear but not accurate. Fact checking
What is precision?
A statement can be both clear and accurate, but not precise. (ex. Jack is overweight BUT how many lbs overweight?
More details please)
What is relevance?
A statement can be clear, accurate and precise, but not relevant to the question at issue
(Ex. your effort in your learning doesn’t measure the quality of retaining your learning
How is that connected to the question?)
What is depth?
A statement can be clear, accurate, precise and relevant, but superficial
Ex. say no to drugs BUT why??
Address the complexities of the question
What is breadth?
A line of reasoning may be clear, accurate, precise, relevant and deep, but still ignore another side of the argument
(Ex. consider a different POV - teacher says 0 participation to you, but it’s because you were studying all night)
What is logic?
When the combination of thoughts are mutually supporting and make sense in combination, the thinking is “logical.
(Ex. does it follow my line of reasoning?)
What is fairness?
We do not naturally consider the rights and needs of others on the same plane with their own rights and needs, but to be a good thinker you should apply “Fairness” in your thinking.
(Am I open minded?
!!You need to be aware that you may be wrong!!)
What are the benefits of critical thinking at work?
Employers value employees with good thinking and communication skills rather than specialized academic skills
What are the benefits of critical thinking at daily life?
It helps us avoid making foolish decision, becoming a good citizen that makes good decisions, developing good thinking skill to examine our own assumptions
What are the 5 most powerful barriers to critical thinking?
egocentrism (self centered thinking), sociocentrism (group centered thinking), unwarranted assumptions, wishful thinking, relativism
