cracking hydrocarbons Flashcards
What is crude oil crude oil ?
crude oil is a finite resource found in rocks, finite mean used up quicker than formed.
How is crude oil formed ?
Formed by the remains of ancient biomass consisting mainly of Plankton that was buried in mud
What is crude oil made up of?
It is a mixture of very large number of compounds (hydrocarbons)
What are most of the compounds in crude oil ?
Most of the compounds in crude oil are hydrocarbons which are made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms
What is the difference between saturated & unsaturated hydrocarbons ?
Saturated Hydrocarbons — contain only carbon- carbon single bonds. Basically surrounded by Hydrogens
Unsaturated Hydrocarbons — contain carbon- carbon double or triple bonds (more hydrogens can be added).
What is the structural formula of methane ?
CH4
What is the structural formula of ethane and the
molecular formula ?
CH3CH3
C2H6
What is the molecular formula for propane ?
C3H8
What is the molecular formula for butane?
C4H10
calculation carbon number * 2 +2
How is crude oil separated how does this work
The crude oil is heated and vaporized the vaporized crude oil enters the fractionating tower that is hotter at the bottom and cooler at the top the hydrocarbons cool as they rise up and condenser different types of hydrocarbons with large molecules are collected as liquid near the bottom which small molecules collect at the top
What are the properties of short chain hydrocarbons
Short chain
High volatility of volatility compound has a low boiling point boiling point low flammability high viscosity low
Properties of long chain hydrocarbons
Long chain
Volatility low boiling point high flammability low viscosity high
What does complete combustion mean
Plenty of oxygen available
Co2 + H2O produced
what does Incomplete combustion mean
Lack of oxygen
CO + H2O
what is an alkene in chemistry
hydrocarbons that contain a carbon-carbon double bond
