Atom structure Flashcards
What is the name of the outer shell
valence
what are the rules of writing a chemical symbol
the first letter is capitalised and if there is a second letter then it’s lower case
electronic structure of neon
It’s in group 8/0
period 2
10 electrons 2,8 it is a nobel gas
explain what happens as you move down the periodic table?
the atoms get larger as you go down the group. the outer electron gets further from the nucleus as you go down the group. the attraction between the nucleus and outer electron gets weaker as you go down the group - so the electron is more easily lost.
It gets more reactive
What are Ions
Ions – electrically charged atoms – can carry a positive or negative charge.
Positive ion are called
Positive ions are cations and are typically metals like copper or sodium.
Negatively-charged ions are called
Negatively-charged ions are anions, formed from non metallic elements like oxygen and sulfur
what do elements’ in group 3 do to get a full outer shell normally
they get a +3 charge (losing 3 electrons)
