Acids and Alkalis - indicators, neutralisation. Flashcards
What are Acids?
Acids are sources of hydrogen ions, H+.
What does hydrochloric acid produce in solution ?
HCl(aq) → H+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
Do Acidic solutions have pH values less than 7 ?
Yes strong is 1
What is a neutral solution ?
It is neither acidic nor alkaline. A neutral solution has a pH value of 7.
Name the 2 different indicator’s and what their difference’s are?
Name the colour changes that happen with acid , neural and alkali substances
Litmus indicators show if solution is acidic or Alkaline, Universal indicators show how acidic or basic a solution is
Litmus Indicator = Acidic: Red / Neutral: Purple. / Alkaline: Blue
Universal indicator = Acidic: Red / Neutral: green / Alkaline: Purple
What happens when an acids react with metals?
A salt and hydrogen are produced when
acid + metal → salt + hydrogen
What happens when an acids react with metal oxides?
A salt and water are produced.
Metal oxides are bases, because they neutralize acids.
What happens when an acids react with carbonates.
A salt, water and carbon dioxide are produced
acid + carbonate → salt + water + carbon dioxide
What is what colour of neutral on the ph. scale?
Universal: Green
Litmus: Purple
Universal: Green
Litmus: Purple
How much stronger is a pH of 2. than 3?
The pH is 2. is 10 times more acidic than pH of 3.
When potassium hydroxide reacts with sulfuric acid what happens?
A salt is formed potassium sulfate.
Potassium sulfide does not contain oxygen.
What makes a weak acid
an acid that partially dissociates into its ions in an aqueous solution or water.
