Course of the Civil War Flashcards
The First Stage of the Civil War was 1918-1920.
What was it characterised by?
Battles and skirmishes mostly in European Russia. The Whites were very disorganised and very uncoordinated, due to them being geographically isolated and not having a main/dominating commander.
Name the three main generals in the Civil War who fought for the Whites.
General Denikin, then replaced by General Wrangel = The South/Crimea
General Kolchak = Siberia
General Yudenich = Estonia
I remember these like:
A in KolchAk = SiberiA
E in YudEnich = Estonia
In Summer 1918, Denikin attempted to take over the city of Tsaritsyn, what happened?
Red Resistance stopped Denikin from succeeding and stopped Denikin from joining up with White Armies in the East.
In October 1919, Denikin got pretty damn close to Moscow. What happened?
Trotsky and the Red Army forced the army South towards the Crimea.
In October 1919, Yudenich got pretty damn close to Petrograd. What happened?
Yudenich only had a small army of 15,000 men so he was forced back by the Reds quite easily.
How many died in the Civil War?
8 million people. 1 million Red Army Soldiers.
The Second Stage of the Civil War was 1920-1921.
What was it characterised by?
Basically just a nationalist struggle against Poland, who’d recently been granted independence. Russo-Polish War.
