Correlation Flashcards
What does correlation focus on
How two un-manipulated co-variables interact with each other. Studies the relationship between variables
What are key words that should be used in relation to correlation
Correlation
Relationship
Relates
Co-variabke
What is a positive correlation
When one co-variable increases, the other does also
What is a negative correlation
When one co-variable increases, the other decreases
What is no correlation
When there is no relationship between co-variables
What is a research question
Broad questions about the concept being studied
What are research aims
Aims that identify a more specific concept to investigate
Why must variables be operationalised
To make them quantitative date that is either ordinal or interval/ratio level so it can be represented on a scatter graph
Why cant nominal data be used
It would provide data that can only be placed within a pie chart and not a scatter graph which is associated with correlation
How is an alternative one tailed hypothesis structured
There will be significant positive/negative correlation between co-variable x and co-variable y
How is an alternative two tailed hypothesis structured
There will be a significant correlation between co-variable x and co-variable y
How is a null hypothesis structured
There will not be a significant correlation between co-variable x and co-variable y; any relationship will be due to chance factors
What is a correlation coefficient
A number between -1 and 1 that determines the direction and strength of a correlation
What are examples of findings and conclusions that can be used
Findings - mean, mode, median, range, outliers
Conclusions - direction, strength
Strengths of correlation
Can reveal new information by analysing the relationship between already existing data
Can be used when variables cannot be manipulated for practical or ethical reasons
Can be a good starting point for research and lead to further investigation
