by interacting with other people if that specific culture
when does enculturation stop?
the process of enculturation never stops as it constantly reinforces your membership of a culture

what is acculturation?
the process of adopting the norms and behaviours of a new culture
what are the four stages in berry’s acculturation model?
1) assimilation
2) integration
3) separation
4) marginalisation
what is assimilation?
when an individual completely abandons their original culture and adopts the values of their new culture
what is integration?
when the individual adopts the new culture whilst still maintaining their original culture
what is separation?
where the individual refuses to adopt any cultural norms of the new culture and maintains their original culture
what is marginalisation?
where it is not possible for an individual to adopt the new culture due to discrimination or exclusion
what is acculturative stress (culture shock)
the psychological impact of adaption to a new culture - may lead to reduced physical and mental health
what is reverse culture shock?
the feeling of surprise/disorientation people experience when being back in their home culture - finding they no longer fit in
what are acculturative gaps?
differences in the values between parents and children as they go through the process of acculturation
