core biological - hormones & pheromones Flashcards
what is a hormone?
a chemical that is secreted by the adrenal glands in the endocrine system - released directly into the bloodstream
what is cortisol?
the primary hormone released in response to stress
it is designed to trigger a fight or flight response - a natural & instinctive response to stressful situations which is necessary for survival
what study can be used for the hormones question?
newcomer et al (1999)
what are pheromones?
a chemical substance produced and released into the environment by an animal - affecting the behaviour or physiology of others of its own species
what are the two types of pheromones?
1) priming pheromones: causes slow & long term physiological changes such as hormonal effects
2) signalling pheromones: produces rapid behavioural effects such as mating
do humans have pheromones?
it is unclear
what study goes with the pheromones question?
wedekind (1995)
