Q

what is the sensory buffer?

A

a temporary store that holds information from the environment very briefly in the form it is received (visual/auditory etc)

Q

what is the short term memory?

A

a store with limited capacity and duration - information enters from the sensory buffer only if attention is paid to the stimuli
if information is rehearsed it will move to the long term memory - if not it may be displaced and lost

Q

what is long term memory?

A

where memories are stored after being rehearsed in the short term memory - unlimited in both capacity and duration

Q

what is the phonological loop?

A

deals with the spoken and written material - divided into two subgroups:
1) phonological store
2) articulatory control process

Q

what is the phonological store?

Q

what is the articulatory control process?

A

the body’s inner voice which processes speech production and allows us to repeat verbal information in a loop

Q

what are schemas?

A

a concept or framework built up about an object/event/person/group
they simplify reality and set up expectations about what is probable & influence the way we interpret information

Q

what is a script?

A

schemas about events in time rather than schemas for objects - when scripts aren’t followed we can become frustrated or angry

16
Q

what was piaget’s theory of building schemas?

A

learning is a combination of accomodation - when we change our schema based on new information & assimilation - when we add information to existing schemas

17
Q

what study goes with the schema question?

A

brewer and treyens (1981)

18
Q

what is system 1 thinking?

A

quick thinking, takes short-cuts (heuristics), commonly used as humans are cognitive misers (always looking for quickest options), prone to errors

19
Q

what is system 2 thinking?

A

works through logic, takes longer than system 1, less mistakes, requires concentration

20
Q

what study goes with the dual processing model?

A

tyversky and kahnemann (1974)
