core cognitive - cognitive processing Flashcards
who introduced the multi-store model of memory?
atkinson & shiffirn (1968)
what is the sensory buffer?
a temporary store that holds information from the environment very briefly in the form it is received (visual/auditory etc)
what is the short term memory?
a store with limited capacity and duration - information enters from the sensory buffer only if attention is paid to the stimuli
if information is rehearsed it will move to the long term memory - if not it may be displaced and lost
what is long term memory?
where memories are stored after being rehearsed in the short term memory - unlimited in both capacity and duration
what study goes with the multi-store question?
h.m. milner (1966)
what is the working memory model?
a development of the multi-store model of memory
who introduced the working memory model?
baddeley and hitch (1970s)
what is the central executive?
drives the whole system & allocates data to the subsystems
what is the phonological loop?
deals with the spoken and written material - divided into two subgroups:
1) phonological store
2) articulatory control process
what is the phonological store?
the body’s inner ear and stores spoken words we hear for 1-2 seconds
what is the articulatory control process?
the body’s inner voice which processes speech production and allows us to repeat verbal information in a loop
what is the visuospatial sketchpad?
stores and processes information in a visual or spatial form - used for navigation
what study goes with the working memory model question?
landry and bartling (2011)
what are schemas?
a concept or framework built up about an object/event/person/group
they simplify reality and set up expectations about what is probable & influence the way we interpret information
what is a script?
schemas about events in time rather than schemas for objects - when scripts aren’t followed we can become frustrated or angry
