core biological - genetics & evolution Flashcards
what are monozygotic twins?
identical twins that come from one split fertilised egg which splits and forms into two eggs - genetically identical
what are dizygotic twins?
fraternal twins that come from two seperate eggs - share 50% of dna
what is the role of family studies?
to understand genetic pass downs & the incidence of behaviours over the years
what study goes with the genetics questions?
weissman et al (2005)
what is a genome?
the complete set of genetic information in an organism - provides all the information the organism requires to function
what is evolution?
the change in heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations - passed down during reproduction
what are epigenetics?
the study of changes in organisms caused by genetic modification of gene expression rather than the altercation of the genetic code itself
what are evolutionary arguments used to explain?
human mating behaviour
what is MHC?
major histocompatibility complex
it can have an influence on a persons choice of mate
what study goes with the evolutionary explaination question?
wedekind (1995)
