Contact STDs Viral Disease Flashcards
Genital herpes, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C (not STD, by contaminated blood), HIV/AIDS
CA - genital herpes
Herpesviridae family
- HHV-2
- enveloped DNA virus
Reservoir - genital herpes
Human
Transmission - genital herpes
Spread by sexual contact
Sxs - genital herpes
Painful vesicles (fluid filled) on the genitals, painful urination
- heals within 2 weeks
- recurrent episodes (herpes you can never get rid of)
Diagnosis - genital herpes.
Via culture or PCR
VF - genital herpes
Virus can hide in the nervous system
Prevention - genital herpes
Education & safe sex practices
Treatment - genital herpes
Management with antiviral drugs
Misc - genital herpes
2 most common STD
Neonatal Herpes - genital herpes
Herpesvirus crosses the placental barrier —> infects the fetus
- damages the CNS, developmental delays, blindness, hearing loss
- survival rate 40%
- newborns infected during vaginal delivery
CA - Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B virus
- enveloped, DNA
Sxs - Hepatitis B
- mild to severe
- acute infection of:
- fever, nausea, & VOMITTING, LOSS OF APPETITE, JAUNDICE
- most adults fully recover
Chronic infections :
- liver failure, cirrhosis, liver cancer
Diagnosis - Hepatitis B
Blood tests, liver ultrasound, liver biopsy
Transmission - Hepatitis B
- Sexual contact
- accidental needle sticks
Prevention - Hepatitis B
Vaccine
- education & safe sex
Treatment - Hepatitis B
No cure, only management
Antivirals
Interferon injections
Liver transplant
CA - hepatitis C
Hepatitis C virus
- enveloped, RNA
Sxs - Hepatitis C
Acute infections: usually asymptomatic but sometimes fever, nausea, VOMITTING, LOSS OF APPETITE, JAUNDICE
- most patients will develop chronic hepatitis:
- liver failure, cirrhosis(liver scarring), liver cancer
Diagnosis - Hepatitis C
Blood tests, liver ultrasound, liver biopsy
Transmission - Hepatitis C
CONTAMINATED BLOOD: blood transfusions, tattoos, IV drugs
Prevention - Hepatitis C
NO vaccine
- universal safety blood handling
Treatment - Hepatitis C
NO cure, only management
- daily Antivirals for 2-6 months
- virus is not detected in the blood
- liver transplant
(They are very expensive)
Misc - Hepatitis C
- 85% of infected patients have chronic hepatitis C
- new antiviral drugs can “cure” (lower # of hep C virus) up to 95% of patients
