Airborne Bacterial upper respiratory diseases Flashcards
Streptococcal pharyngitis, scarlet fever, diphtheria
CA - Streptococcal Pharyngitis
Streptococcus pyogenes
- gram positive cocci, chains, GAS
AKA strep throat
VF - streptococcus pharyngitis
- beta hemolysin - completely lyses RBCs
- streptokinase - dissolves/prevents blood clot formation
- hyaluronidase - dissolves substance holding conn. Tissue cells
- capsules & M proteins - allows for adherence
Sxs - streptococcal pharyngitis
Inflammation of throat, tonsils, otitis media in some cases; fever
Diagnosis - streptococcal pharyngitis
- By serological tests
- beta hemolysis on blood agar
Prevention - streptococcal pharyngitis
By covering mouth & nose, wearing masks
( practice good respiratory hygiene )
Treatment - streptococcal pharyngitis
Antibiotics ( penicillin )
CA - scarlet fever
Streptococcus pyogenes
- gram positive cocci, chains, GAS
VF - scarlet fever
- beta hemolysin, streptokinase, hyaluronidase, capsules, M proteins
- erthrogenic toxin - produced by lysogeny
Sxs - scarlet fever
Due to toxemia - sore throat, high fever, bright red, flat sandpaper-like rash mostly upper body, “strawberry tongue”
Diagnosis - scarlet fever
- By serological tests
- beta hemolysis on blood agar
Prevention - scarlet fever
Covering mouth & nose, wearing masks (practice good respiratory hygiene)
Treatment - scarlet fever
Antibiotics (penicillin)
Misc - scarlet fever
Most common in children ages 5-15
CA - diphtheria
Corynebacterium diphtheriae
- gram positive bacilli
- pleomorphic
VF - diphtheria
Very resistant to drying
