How did the Bolsheviks deal with opposition?
They either went along with popular demands or used terror.
How did the Bolsheviks use terror?
- Established the Cheka on thr 7th of December
- Banned the opposition press
- The Kadets were outlawrd, beaten to death by sailors, the same fate was fiven to the SRs and Mensheviks who’s leaders were imprisoned in December.
- Class warfare was encouraged, those accused of being Bourgeoisie could be arrested.
- The legal system was abolished and replaced with the violent revolutionary justice.
What was the decree on peace when was it passed?
26th october 1917, immediate end of the war.
What was the decree on land, when was it passed?
27th october 1917
Recognised all peasant seizures and abolished private ownership.
What was the press decree, when was it passed?
October, banned opposition press
What was the Decree on Worker’s control of the factories, when was it passed?
November, gave the workers the right to supervise management.
What was the military decree, when was it passed?
December, removed class ranks.
Describe the context of the Sovnarkom.
During the seconf congress of soviets, half of the socialist revolutionaries and mensheviks walked out after hearing about the October Revolution.
The sovnarkom was set up to control the government.
How was sovnarkom comprised?
7 SRs and mainly Bolsheviks. Lenin as chariman. Trotsky as commisar for foreign affairs.
How did the Sovnarkom rule?
By decree, it did not need the soviet’s approval.
How often did the Sovnarkom meet?
Once or Twice a day.
Describe the context of the constituent assembly.
Lenin bregudgingly called for a constituent assembly after workers threatened to paralyse food supplies. However, Lenin only won 175 seats compared to the SRs 410.
How did Lenin deal with the problem of the constituent assembly?
He afgued that his government represented a higher stage of democracy than an elected assembly, he accused them of being Bourgeoisie and closed down the assembly.
When a crowd protested in favour of the assembly, soldiers loyal to the sovnarkom fired on them. Killing 45 civillians.
What did Russia lose in the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk?
- Recognised the independence of Ukraine, Georgia and Finland.
- Gave up 1 million square miles of territory and 1/3 of its population.
- Cost 3 million roubles.
- Lost the majority of its coal, oil and iron stores.
When was the treaty of Brest Litovsk signed?
3rd of March.
