conscience - St thomas Aquinas Flashcards
What is the term conscience?
” human reason making moral decisions. the knowledge we have of what is right and wrong given by God”
What does St Thomas Aquinas argue?
He defined conscience as “the mind of human beings making moral decisions”. The ability to discover natural law is what Catholics call “conscience”
It is often described as the “voice of God or the impulse to do good and void evil
What do Catholics need to make sure?
Catholics have an obligation to follow their conscience. They must make sure that their conscience is informed by the Bible and the tradition as interpreted by the Church.
Catholics making moral decisions must follow their conscience.
What do Catholics believe about suffering?
If humans followed their conscience more often there would be far less moral evil in the world and far less suffering as a result.
This is another proof of the goodness of God who created human beings in imago dei and is someties given as a response to the problem of evil.
Quote from aquinas
“He who acts against his conscience always sins”
How will this change a catholics life?
Catholcis wil try to use their conscience when making a moral decision as it can give a personal response to the particular situation they find themselves in.
