connective tissue Flashcards
what are the 3 types of connective tissue(CT)
soft connective tissue
hard connective tissue
blood and lymph
what does connective tissue consist of
an extracellular matrix= made up of fibres(collagen, elastic, reticular), ground substance, tissue fluid
cells = fibroblasts, adipose, osteocytes(bones), chondrocytes(cartilage)
what are the different types of soft connective tissue
loose, dense regular CT or dense irregular CT
what is loose connective tissue made up of
elastic fibres, bundles of collagen(light orange), fibroblasts
what is the difference between dense regular and irregular CT
both made up of densely packed bundles of collagen(light pink) and fibroblasts
difference = regular the fibres are aligned, irregular the fibres run in many directions
what are the 2 types of hard connective tissue
cartilage and bone
what are the properties of cartilage and what causes them
strong, flexible, compressible, semi-rigid tissue
semi-rigid nature due to highly hydrated ground substance
it is avascular and receives nutrients by diffusion through matrix
what are the 3 types of cartilage, and which is most common
hyaline, elastic and fibrocartilage
type is defined by the extracellular matrix
most common =hyaline(articular surface, trachel rings etc.)
what are the 2 types of bone tissue and what do they make up
cortical bone makes up shaft
cancellous/trabecular bone occupies ends of the bone(epiphyses, looks like fine meshwork(aero bar)
