Congenital Heart Disease: Septal Defects Flashcards
What are the clinical signs of atrial and ventricular septal defects
Common in a cat
Vary from asymptomatic to congestive heart failure
What does ASD stand for?
Arterial septal defect
What happens to the heart with an ASD?
The blood will shunt from the left side to the right side.
Overloading the right side of the heart
What does the heart murmur sound like in a patient with ASD?
Soft, systolic murmur, split-second heart sound
What do the radiographs look like in a patient with ASD?
Right-sided heart enlargement
Increased pulmonary vascularity
Left atrium normal to slightly enlarged
What does VSD stand for?
Ventricular septal defect
What happens to the heart with VSD?
The left side of the heart is usually overloaded and enlarged
What does the heart murmur sound like in a patient with VSD?
harsh, holosystolic murmur, right sternal border
What do the radiographs look like in a patient with VSD?
Pulmonary over circulation
The left atrium and ventricle enlargement
What does the echocardiogram of a patient with ASD and VSD look like?
Demonstrates the septal defects
How do you treat septal defects?
With medical management of the congestive heart failure
What do atrial and septal defects allow for?
The mixing of oxygenated blood and unoxygenated blood
What happens to the blood of a patient with an Atrial septal defect?
Blood is typically shunted from the left atrium to the right atrium
In what species is atrial septal defect common?
Cats
What happens if the interventricular septum fails to form?
A ventricular septal defect develops
Left-side of the heart is usually overloaded
Blood wants to flow from high pressure to low pressure so the left ventricle to the right.
