Congenital Heart Disease: Patent Ductus Arteriosus Flashcards
Patent Ductus Arteriosus
Precordial thrill
a vibration of the chest wall
What is due to the failure of the ductus arteriosus to close after parturition
Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)
When does the Ductus arteriosus normally close?
The first 12 to 24 hours of life
What happens if the ductus arteriosus remains open?
Blood is shunted from the aorta to the pulmonary artery and back to the lungs
What happens eventually with a patient that has a PDA?
The lungs become volume overloaded. Blood will hyperperfusion the lungs and the left side will become volume overloaded
What kind of murmur is heard in a patient with PDA?
Machinery murmur
What normally happens during fetal development?
The ductus carries blood from the pulmonary artery to the aorta during fetal development
What are the clinical signs and popular signalment of PDA?
Young female dogs
Loud murmur over the left thorax
May be asymptomatic
How do you diagnose PDA?
Auscultation
ECG/Echocardiography
What will you see on an echo?
Left ventricular dilation
Dilation of the aorta and pulmonary artery
What is the treatment for PDA?
Surgical duct ligation
Coil or Amplatz embolization
What is the prognosis of patients with PDA?
Excellent with surgical correction
What percentage of dogs with PDA will die without surgical correction?
64% will die in a year
