Composition 5 &6 Flashcards
INQUIRY ORIENTED INSTRUCTION
- hands on learning
- in inquiry or discovering learning students probe, collect, and analyze data; draw conclusions; and ask new questions.
- inquiry places students at the center of a learning situation so they may be exposed to content through exploration.
THEORY OF CONSTRUCTIVISM
- students need first hand experience to abandon preconceived notions they may have
- students learn best through discovery and active involvement with people and materials
- teacher should be a guide on the side, crafting activities and open ended questions
ACIDS
- a compound that accepts an electron pair
- compounds that break up in water to give off hydronium ions
BASE
- a compound that donates and electron pair to another compound
- compounds that cause the formation of the hydroxide ion when placed in water
LITMUS PAPER
paper stained with litmus used to indicate the acidity or alkalinity of a substance
METRIC SYSTEM
uses measuring units such as meters and grams and adds prefixes like kilo, milli and centi to counts orders of magnitude
temperature is measured in Celsius
ENGLISH IMPERIAL SYSTEM
things are measured in feet, inches, and pounds
temperature is measured in Fahrenheit
SELF -ASSESSMENT
- students evaluate his or her own progress or performance
- students need to asses their abilities, their strengths and weaknesses.
- when students gain self assessment skills, they also gain confidence and move more to becoming a self-directed, life long learner
FORMAL ASSESSMENT
presented in a written format and administered to students in a single sitting.
PORTFOLIOS
- show the cumulative efforts and learning of a particular student over time
- offer valuable data about student improvement and skill mastery
- provides information about how each student learns and what is important to him or her in the learning process
- assess progress over time
- to evaluate your own work and reflect on it
PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
-requires students to demonstrate that they have mastered specific skills and competencies by performing or producing something, for example
- designing and carrying out experiments
- writing essays which require students to rethink, to integrate, or to apply information;
- working with other students to accomplish tasks
- demonstrating proficiency in using a piece of equipment or a technique
- writing term papers
- participating in oral examinations
MEASURING LEARNING
- authentic assessment and allows teachers to adjust the instruction according to student learning and potential difficulties in learning
- it is essential that teachers monitor and assess students’ understanding of concepts and skills on a regular, consistent basis and use this information to adjust instruction
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
- formal and informal processes teachers and student use to gather evidence for the purpose of improving learning
- to improve learning and occurs before and during instruction
- assessment for learning
- to improve achievement, to support learning
- eliciting evidence about learning to close the gap between current and desired performance
- providing feedback to students
- involving students in the assessment and learning process
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
- verifies learning
- assessment of learning
- to measure learning
- exs. state-mandated assessments, district benchmark, and end of unit or chapter tests, end of term
SELF-ASSESSMENT
requires students to apply known criteria and expectations to their work and reflect on results to determine their progress toward the mastery of a prescribed learning outcome.
