Composition 13 Flashcards
EVOLUTION
the change in the gene pool of a population of organisms over time
NATURAL SELECTION
the process where organisms that are best suited to their environment survive and pass on their genetic traits in increasing number to successive generations
MUTATION
a natural process that changes a DNA sequence
changes the structure of a gene
ENZYME
a protein that acts as catalyst during a chemical reaction
ADAPTATION
a change or process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment
SELECTIVE BREEDING
refers to human selection of which organisms breed with another, and thus, control of the genetic material that is passed onto offspring
EXTINCTION
the state or process of a species, family, or large group being dying out
MIGRATION
movement of a population to another location
GENETIC MUTATION
a change in DNA sequence, usually occurring because of errors in replication or repair
GENETIC DRIFT
chance changes in a population from one generation to the next (the lucky who survive)
