Composition 16 Flashcards
FOSSIL FUELS
coal, oil, and natural gas
have been formed from the organic remains of prehistoric plants and animals
VOLCANO ERUPTION
1.magma rises through cracks or weaknesses in the Earth’s crust
2.pressure builds up inside the Earth
3.when pressure is released(result of plate movement) magma explodes to the surface causing volcanic eruption
4 lava for the eruption cools to form new crust
IGNEOUS ROCK FORMATION
formed when molten rock called magma rises up from the Earth’s mantle deep underground
SEDIMENTARY ROCK FORMATION
when rocky fragments and sediments are deposited together by wind, water or ice
METAMORPHIC ROCK
extreme heat or pressure underground can bake, squeeze, or fold rocks into something new
EROSION
the process by which soil particles are displaced
CARBON
naturally abundant, nonmetallic element that occurs in all organic compounds and can be found in all known forms of life
DECOMPOSERS
break down carbon compounds in dead animals and plants and convert the carbon to carbon dioxide
