Composition 17 Flashcards
EQUATOR
an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres
the closer region is to the equator the warmer it will be
the farther it is from the equator the colder it will be
HUMIDITY
the water vapor in the surrounding air
HYGROMETER
the instrument used for measurement of humidity
ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE
the amount of pressure exerted by the weight of the atmosphere
ANEMOMETER
measures speed of wind
BAROMETER
measures atmospheric pressure
RAINFALL
the amount of condensed water from the atmosphere
that falls
RAIN GAUGE
measures rainfall
WIND
air in motion
produced by uneven heating of the earths surface
caused by difference in air pressure
warm air(less dense) rises then cool air moves in and replaces the rising warm air
the movement of air is what makes the wind blow
WEATHER
includes temperature, precipitation, humidity, wind speed over short periods of time
changes quickly from one day to the next
CLIMATE
refers to the averages in rainfall, humidity, temperature, etc of an area over fairly long periods of time
is indicative of average conditions
HYDROSPHERE
the liquid water component of the Earth
covers about 70% of the surface of the Earth
always in motion
LITHOSPHERE
refers to the solid rocky crust covering entire planet
FRONTAL SURFACE
boundary separating two masses of air of different densities
SEASONAL CHANGES
caused by the tilt of the Earths’ axis with respect to its orbit around the sun
