Define fitness.
The ability to meet the demands of the environment.
What is cardiovascular fitness?
Your ability to exercise your whole body for long periods of time.
What is cardiovascular fitness important for?
To keep going for long periods of time e.g. cross-country running; long distance cycling
What are the tests for cardiovascular fitness?
12 minute cooper run; harvard step test
What is muscular endurance?
Your ability to use involuntary muscles repeatedly.
What is muscular endurance important for?
Sports where you are using the same muscles repeatedly e.g. rowing
What are the tests for muscular endurance?
One minute press up test; one minute sit up test.
What is muscular strength?
Your ability to exert force.
What is muscular strength important for?
Weight-lifting
What is the test for muscular strength?
Grip dynamometer
What is flexibility?
The range of motion of your joints to move freely.
What is flexibility important for?
Gymnastics; trampolining
What is the test for flexibility?
Sit and reach test
What is body composition?
The percentage of body weight that is muscle, fat or bone.
What is agility?
The ability to control the movement of the whole body and change position quickly.
What is agility important for?
Sports where you have to move or change direction quickly e.g netball, badminton
What is the test for agility?
Illinois agility run
What is balance?
Being able to keep the body stable while at rest or in motion.
What is balance important for?
Gymnastics
What is co-ordination?
The ability to use 2 or more body parts together.
What is co-ordination important for?
Badminton; tennis
What is power?
The ability to undertake strength performance quickly.
What is power important for?
Netball; rowing; rugby
What is the test for power?
Vertical jump.
