international, federal, state, local
refers tot eh study of health and disease in populations
epidemiology
information that can be counted or expressed numerically and is often collected in experiments, manipulated and statistically analyzed, can be in graphs or charts
quantitative data
refers to the estimated population of people who are managing a disease at any given time
prevalence
refers to annual diagnosis rate of the # of new cases of a particular disease diagnosed each year
incidence
an unexpectedly large # of cases of disease in a particular place and time
epidemic
a disease that occurs regularly in a population as a matter of course
endemic
an outbreak of disease over a wide geographical area, often worldwide
pandemic
every element in the population has an equal chance of being selected, reduces chance of bias
random sample
selecting an element according to certain subgroups, research sample
stratified sample
select every nth person to participate
systematic sample
someone familiar with the population selects the sample, high chance of bias
judgement sample
sample group is chosen based solely on convenience
convenience sample
type of variable- the outcome of interest, should change in response to intervention
dependent variable
