What are the two forms of atrophic rhinitis?
B. bronchiseptica and Pasteurella
What is true about B. bronchiseptica
Usually mild and temporary
What is true about Pasteurella multocida
Severe and permanent
Introduced from infected pigs
Intensified from overcrowding, mixing and poor ventilation.
Appears in animals 3-8 weeks
It is rare to find herds with no signs of nasal turbinate atrophy
How do you treat Pasteurella multocida?
Only treated when disease rises to an unacceptable level.
Antibiotics used are ceftiofur, sulfonamides, tylosin, tetracyclines.
Other treatment and preventatives include vaccines, and improved hygiene practices.
What is Brucellosis scientific name?
Brucella suis
How is Brucellosis transmitted?
Ingestion of infected tissues or wastes.
Boars transmit through semen
Suckling pigs (rare)
What are the clinical signs of Brucellosis?
Bacteremia that persists for 90 days, abortion, orchitis, lameness, spondylitis, paralysis, metritis, abscesses, and temp or permanent sterility
