Colour Theory Flashcards
1) What are primary colours?
2) What are secondary colours?
3) What are tertiary colours?
1) Primary colours are red, blue and yellow, and are the group of colours which can mix to make all other colours.
2) Secondary colours, orange, green and purple are made by mixing two primary colours.
3) Tertiary colours are made by mixing mixing a primary and secondary colour together. For example, blue and purple mix to make blue-purple.
1) What is a hue?
2) What are tints and shades?
3) What is monochrome?
1) A hue describes the visible colour, such as green.
2) They are created by adding black or white to a colour to make it lighter or darker, The lighter variations of the colour are called tints and the darker variations are called shades.
3) Monochrome is the colour range of a specific hue. This will include tints and shades created by adding black and white adjusting the saturation.
1) What are complementary colours?
2) What is harmony?
3) What are discords?
4) What are the 3 types of colour combinations called.
1) They are colours opposite each other on the colour wheel.
2) Colours that are close to each other on the colour wheel. Also colours that come from the same hue.
3) Discords are colours that clash and don’t work well together.
4) There are triadic, tetradic and analogous colour combinations.
1) What are triadic colour combinations?
2) What are tetradic colour combinations?
3) What are analogous colour combinations?
4) What is colour saturation?
1) A combination of 3 colours that form a triangle on the colour wheel. For example, red, yellow and blue.
2) A combination of 4 colours that form a rectangle on the colour wheel. For example, blue, green, red and orange.
3) A combination of multiple colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel. They are harmonious. For example, red, orange and yellow.
4) Colour saturation relates to the intensity of colours which make an image more vivid. The higher the saturation, the more bright and vivid the colour is.
What is colour association?
Colour association is the objects, themes or moods that colours are associated with. For example, the colour red can be associated with anger.
