Line and Tone Flashcards
What are the 6 components of graphic design?
The 6 components of graphic design are colour, tone, line, composition, typography, imagery.
1) What is a line?
2) Explain how line is used in graphic design
3) What are the different types of line (state 6)?
1) Lines are pathways that connect two points.
2) The use of lines in graphic design can be used to communicate messages to the viewer.
3) Lines may be straight, zig-zagged, curved, tapered, solid or dotted.
1) What is tone?
2) What are the 4 different uses of tone?
1) In art and design, tone refers to how light or dark something is. Tones could refer to black, white and the grey tones between. It could refer to how light or dark a colour appears. In real life tone is created by the way light falls on an object.
2) The different uses of tone are:
- Tone that provides contrast
- Tone that creates definition
- Tone that creates shape
- Tone that creates depth
1) What are the 2 different types of tonal gradients?
2) Name 5 different types of tonal processes
1) - Linear tonal gradient
- Radial tonal gradient (bright circle on the inside that fades out)
2) - Tonal hatching
- Tonal cross hatching
- Tonal fill: A gradient fill digitally with different shades
- Tonal stippling: Drawing using small dots
- Tonal shading
1) Explain what thick and thin lines are used for
2) What are the different ways that line can be formed (state 4)?
1) Thick and thin lines are also known as definition (thin) and boundary (thick) lines. A boundary line is one that occurs on part of a 3D object we cannot see behind. This is mainly the edges of an object. The boundary line is around the outside of the object, while the definition line in drawn on the object to provide dimension.
2) Continuous line, sketched line, implied line, thick and thin lines.
