Why was collectivization introduced?
Fear of invasion from the west after the west helped the whites
Industrialization was important in winning any future wars
Disappointing industrial output
Reintroduce communist principles to counter NEP
How were the collective farms organized?
Sovkhovs or State Farms were introduced all land was owned by the state and workers were paid wages
Kolkhovs where workers kept plots of land and had to supply fixed amounts to the state at fixed prices.
240,000 of these farms were set up in 1940
They were around 500 hectares
What were the effects of collectivization?
Grain production fell from 73.3 million tonnes in 1928 to 67.6 in 1934.
It achieved its goal of feeding the towns and the red army
By 1936 more than 90% of the land had been collectivized
