Why was the Tsar such a bad leader?

A

He was easily influenced and refused to share power.

Why was Russia so backwards?

A

85% of its people were farmers but only 5% of the land was farmed. Because of primitive tools and strip farming in 1880 only 3.4 million tonnes of grain was produced.
In 1880 3.2 million tonnes of tonnes of coal was produces
0.5 million tonnes of oil

What was Russia like for the different social groups?

A

The rich made up 11% of the population and owned 25% of the land.
The poor made up 80% of the population and had it very bad.

Why did opposition grow 1905-1914?

A

Socialist revolutionaries in the countryside.
In 1904 and 1905 Russia were defeated in the Russo Japanese war.
It led to protests like Blood Sunday in which 200,000 people marched to the Tsars winter palace. 200 died.

Why was the October Manifesto ineffective?

A

The Duma was made in 1906 but was closed after 72 days.Three more Dumas were set up over the net ten years with even less power.
Nicholas remained as an Autocrat.

A

A Russian Army advanced 160km into Austria.
50,000 killed at the battle of Tannenberg
92,000 taken prisoner

Why did the war go badly?

A

Germans were able to intercept Russian Radio
There were 6,000,000 men and only 4,500,000 rifles.
Nicholas was commander-in-chief
Bad medical supplies - 18,000 were left on a petrograd station for a week.

A

Railway network was inadequate and broke down.
There was enough land but not enough locomotives.
Prices in Petrograd rose by 300%
