cognitive interview Flashcards
who developed the CI?
fischer and gieselman
who uses the CI?
police interviewing witnesses
why was the CI created?
to help prompt the original memory as every time a memory is recalled it is reconstructed-Bartlett
what are the 4 retrieval strategies of CI?
report everything
context reinstatement
recall in reverse order
recall from another witnesses perspective
what does report everything in the CI involve?
witness tells every single detail they can remember
even anything irrelevant as it could trigger context/state cues
what does context reinstatement in the CI involve?
witness is asked to visualise the scene in their head this would act as a context cue to trigger possible memories of the event (in some cases the reconstruct the crime)
what does recall in reverse order in the CI involve?
improves accuracy and removes dishonesty as it is harder to lie
what does recall from another witnesses perspective in the CI involve?
avoids the possibility of a schema effecting their recall as they are in someone else’s shoes
Research + CI
kohnken found the CI produces improved recall of correct information by 81%
Research - CI
Memon’s study showed that police were only given 4 hours of training for the cognitive interview due to budgets this reduced the CI effectiveness and produces little additional information from a witness
