Acute - NHS - rapid onset
Chronic - TB weeks
Aseptic - viruses
Meningitis Ix
- CT head if LOC or focal
- Blood cultures
- LP
CSF analysis table - appearance, glucose, cell type, protein, opening pressure
Bacterial meningitis RFs
Complement deficiency, hyposplenism
Meningococcus - hypogammaglobulinaemia
Pneumococcus - pneumonia, head trauma
Bacterial meningitis Mx
Resuscitate
IV ceftriaxone
IV corticosteroids (unless meningococcus)
Neonates/elderly - ampicillin - listeria
LOC/focal signs - acyclovir (viral enceph cover)
Encephalitis most common pathogen
HSV 2
Encephalitis Ix
- CT
- LP if no ICP
- MRI - GS

IV acyclovir
Brain abscess causes
Strep, Staph
TB
Fungal
Parasitic
Brain abscess Sx
SOL, swinging fever
Brain abscess spread
Haematogenous spread (endocarditis)
Local extension (otitis media)
