what are the rules for clinical preparation?
I D badges must be worn
No jewellery except a single plain ring
Nails should be short and clean
No false nails, extensions or varnish
Headscarves must be tucked in and free from embellishments
Make up should be discreet
Perfume/aftershave kept to a minimum
Facial hair must be neat and tidy
No false eyelashes or extensions
Shoes must be waterproof and closed over
what is essential PPE for clinic?
- gloves
- apron
- face mask
- visors

when must gloves not be worn?
- NOT when opening drawers/cupboards
- NOT when touching hair etc., adjusting chair or using a pen
- NOT when dispensing oral hygiene aids
what patient PPE can be worn in the clinic?
- disposable bib
- safety glasses
- bowl
do you wear gloves when decontaminating?
YES
what must be done after each patient?
Safely dispose of sharps (in sharps box provided)
Safely dispose of sundries (in a clinical waste bag)
Place instruments into the red lid box
Fill in the paperwork and send with the instruments
what is important about disposing sharps?
never fill sharps box above the black line
what are examples of sharps containing medical waste?
- local anaesthetic cartridges
- vials
- medicament/cement bottles
what goes into the red stream waste?
- amalgam shavings
- empty amalgam capsules
what colour bag is the clinical waste bin bag?
orange
