Classical Conditioning Flashcards
conditional reflex
a conditional action done upon training
ex: metronome sound was singled prior to giving food for a dog, soon the metronome sound alone owl allow the dog to salivate before the food arrived
contingent relationship
the presentation of a stimulus reliably leads to the presentation of another
classical conditioning
the learning of a contingency between a particular signal and a later event that are paired in time and/or space
unconditional stimulus (US)
it unconditionally and automatically triggers a response in the absence of any learning
unconditioned response (UR)
the response that occurs after the unconditioned stimulus, it naturally occurs prior to any learning
conditional stimulus (CS)
a previously neutral stimulus that becomes associated with an unconditional stimulus to eventually trigger a response on its own
conditioned response (CR)
the response that occurs once the contingency between the CS and the US has been learned
acquisition
the process by which a contingency between a CS and US is learned
extinction
the loss of the CR when the CS no longer predicts the US
spontaneous recovery
the sudden recovery of a conditional response following a rest period after extinction
stimulus generalization
the process by which stimuli similar to the CS will also elicit a CR
it provide efficiency and flexibility
stimulus discrimination
restricts the range of conditional stimuli that can elicit a response
CS+
predicts the presence of the US
CS-
predicts the absence of the US
phobia
an exaggerated, intense and persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things or people
implosive therapy
an individual with a. phobia is encouraged to confront the CS that evoke anxiety without presenting the US
systematic desensitization
a gradual method that starts at the far end of the generalization curve and works its way to the peak (where the anxiety is max)
compensatory response
a process which counteracts a challenge to homeostasis
