Roberts - pay rarely corresponds with labour shortages - people in upper, middle classes occupations often fix their own salaries, and suppliment them with other incentives
2012 high pay centre - total pay of chief executives on the 100 largest companies on stock exchange had risen by 49% during previous year, compared with average increases of less than 3% of their employees
impact on life chances - if employees are getting paid less than the higher up people they may not have enough to live happily with so therefore could become depressed
