Circulation - heart Flashcards
describe the structure of the human heart
4 chambered pump providing dual circulation
pulmonery (lungs)
systemic (rest of the body)
what does the right atrium do
receives deoxygenated blood from the body and delivers it to the right ventricle which pumps blood to the lungs
what does the left atrium do
receives oxygenated blood from lungs and delivers blood to the left ventricle which pumps blood to the rest of the body
what are arteries
large
elastic
muscular
what are veins
thinner than arteries
skeletal muscles assist blood flow
valves ensure they flow in one direction
what are capillaries
slow exchange of materials
what is it called when the heart contracts and relaxes in a rhythmic cycle
cardiac cycle
what is it called when the contraction, or pumping, phase
systole
what is it called with the relaxation, or filling, phase
diastole
how does blood pressure differ in the body
there are areas of high and low blood pressure
in all different directions
describe the control of heart movement
contraction of the heart muscle is stimulated by an electrical impulse which is sent by the pace maker
