Viruses Flashcards
what are viruses made up of
they are sub microscopic infectious agents that replicate only inside the living cells of other organisms
how does a virus recognise its host
it attaches to a specific receptor site called the surface maker on the hosts cell membrane through attachment protein via the glycoproteins embedded in the viral envelope
how does a virus replicate inside its host
they are intracellular parasites which means they can only replicate within the cell
it makes itself the host
are viruses alive
yes
they consist of DNA and RNA and viral genomes which may encode as well to help replicate cells and effect other living cells
do viruses only infect humans and animals
NO
what is the lytic cycle
it accumulates in the death of the host cell, produces a new phage. this phage is called a virulent phage, cuts open the certain phages of DNA
what is the lysogenic cycle
replicated the phage genome without destroying the host, the viral DNA is replicated and is incorporated into the host cells chromosome. passes copies to the daughters cells
