Chpt 25: (10) Random Evolutionary Events Flashcards
Founder EVENT
when a subset of a population breaks off from the original
Genetic polymorphism
when there are multiple different alleles for a gene (not must 2)
Bottleneck effect
what happens when a large population is is dramatically reduced, then the survivors start reproducing again with limited genetic variation
What the impact of genetic drift is based on
size of population
small populations have fewer individuals to dilute the impact of the drift event (that’s why Hardy Wienberg require infinite population)
Heterozygosity (H) formula
H = 1 - (p^2 + q^2)
basically H = 2pq
Ecological corridor
a physical connection between spaces like reserves/protected areas that are used to reduce genetic isolation/promote gene flow and diversity
Heterozygosity (H) definition
probability of drawing 2 different alleles from a gene pool
probability of having heterozygote
also called gene diversity
fragmentation
when a previously large continuous habitat is broken into smaller, unconnected pieces
exp. from class: cape buffalo
Founder EFFECT
what happens if population subset (formed by a founder event) starts reproducing with its limited genetic diversity
